I want to live

She had never had owners to love her.
She was called feral.
But she always found her way into peoples yards.
She looked longingly into windows and saw others of her kind..warm and well fed.
When she was picked up one day, found starving at the side of a road, the look in her eyes melted the Samaritans heart.
She was gravely ill..her chances were slim...
but with every lick to her saviors hand she was saying
"I want to LIVE!"

There were 8 of them.
Found in a box outside the shelters doors.
They were cold and hungry and full of worms.
They were sick and they were hungry.
They were full of love to give.
When the shelter workers lifted their wiggly thin little bodies from
that box..they could almost hear them
"We want to LIVE!"

He had lived his life on a chain.
The scars all over his body told the sad tale.
He had been the victim of dog fighting.
His ears were torn, infection was everywhere, his body worn,
But his heart thudded strongly under the gentle hands that now held
him.
His eyes never left theirs. His tail never stopped wagging.
He was telling them with every bit of strength he had, and was
mustering some strength he did not have just to say
"I want to LIVE!"

She was old and could not hear. It hurt a bit to walk.
Her skin was bad and her hair was matted.
It was obvious by her actions someone had loved her at one time.
But now she was behind a chainlink door to a cement kennel.
Now she was leaning against a wall hoping for someone to stop and
scratch her head.
She still moved to the front whenever shadows passed, hoping to
relive her glory days as a beloved pet.
She was not yet done. You could see in the proud lift of her head
and the glimmer in her eyes...
"I want to LIVE!"

As much as they all wanted to live,
with sorrow in their hearts..
each of them left this world.
The young, the old, the battle scarred.
The unwanted victims of a cast off society.
These lives..these humble creatures...
They want to live.
